Families wait and pray
as the Phoenix rises from the bowels of the earth,
thirty-three times it rises.
Technology and miracle combine
to resurrect men buried alive.
“I was with God, and I was with the devil.
They fought. And God won.”
A family waits and prays
in a hospital far away beside a young man’s body,
found in the gutter, brain injured beyond repair.
Technology pumps, no miracle occurs
to resurrect this life smashed short.
“The Lord gave, and the Lord has taken away;
blessed be the name of the Lord.”
