  1. Thank you Allan! Both for your kind words on the essay and for telling me about this play, Testament. I found a write up on Wikipedia of all places! Icons are hard to write about – well, they are icons and have a fixed meaning in so many people’s minds it’s hard to rethink or re imagine any other way. It’s a gift to have an open mind.

  2. I like what you have to say in this article, Janet. It brought back memories of a play that we saw about 5 years ago at the SF A.C.T.: Testament, by Colm Tóibín. Here’s how Artistic Director, Carey Perloff, describes it, in part:

“…In Testament, Tóibín places a woman alone onstage in an unidentified place and time that is called “A space. Now.” This woman is being held captive in her house by men (a “pair of brutes”) who are waiting “for me to tell them something else, as I refused to return to the subject of their desires—our son, our son, our son, I cannot say his name.” So begins an astonishing story, a vivid attempt by a fierce, brilliant, dispossessed woman to tell her story the way she remembers it.”

You’ve given me a lot to think about. Thank you.
